I went to see my dentist who is Mr. Trotter at St. Mary's Street Ely. I had a violent toothache and while I was in the chair being treated Mr. Trotter was called in to have a look at my tongue. He said that he was going to refer me to Newmarket Hospital. I said that it would be easier for me to go to Addenbrooke's and it was agreed that I could.
At Addenbrooke's they took a small piece of my tongue for a biopsy. I went back two weeks later, during the last week in April 2001, to see Mr.Cheng and he told me that I had cancer.
I was at work on 30th April 2001when I was asked to ring Mr. Cheng at Addenbrookes. I did so and Mr. Cheng asked me if I would go to the hospital on 3rd May to prepare for the operation on 4th May.
The staff and nurses were very helpful and reasuring. I went down to the operating theatre at about 7:40am and didn't get back onto the ward until about 2:00am on 5th May. I had a part of my tongue removed and also the lympth glands on my right hand side. I have a scar that runs from behind my right ear and ends under my chin.
