A Newmarket factory worker has raised £2000.00 for the
Addenbrookes Hospital department which has been treating his wife.
Paul Wright, who works for Roneo Systems, in Fordham Road, had been set to take
part in the London Marathon to raise money for the Department of Maxillo-facial
Surgery but had to pull our when a low blood count was diagnosed and he was
forced to quit his training for some months.
However, he got back on the road and in September completed a 15-mile run
between his home and the hospital to collect the money he had been pledged
ahead of his marathon attempt.
Paul's wife, Karen, was treated in the department in March 2001 after a routine
visit to the dentist revealed she had oral cancer.
Following a 12-hour operation involving major reconstructive surgery, she made
a good recovery.
But a couple of months ago a lump appeared on her jaw which also required
surgery.
Since the operation, Karen, who works in the dispensary at Lloyds Chemist in
The Rookery, has had to undergo radiotherapy treatment and is battling her way
back to health. "I am determined to beat it," said Karen.
Paul added: "The treatment Karen received has been wonderful. "Having to deal
with cancer is the worst possible thing for any family and this is our way of
saying thank you to the department."
The couple have two daughters, Natalie, who is this year's Newmarket Carnival
Princess and Sarah.
They said they wanted to thank everyone who had supported Paul's effort and
their appeal. "We are very grateful to all those people who made donations,"
said Karen.
