What do Maxillofacial prosthetists/technologists do?

They construct prostheses and surgical appliances from prescription or from discussion with the medical team concerned with the patients rehabilitation.
All prostheses and appliances are fashioned on a cast taken from a mould of the patient. Depending on what is required the materials used will range from soft and hard plastics through to modern metals like titanium. In the case of a facial prosthesis, once it has been finished the patient is instructed in its use, care and maintenance.

Services provided

  • Facial prostheses
  • Maxillary & Jaw prostheses
  • Skullplates (in titanium or acrylic)
  • Intraoral splints - for emergency trauma or for elective surgery
  • Orthodontic braces

Who uses the Technical Service ?

Patients referred from Maxillofacial, Orthodontics, Plastic, ENT, Ophthalmic, Oncology, Neurosurgery departments or direct from GPs if it's for a prosthesis.
